The History of Lunch

During the Middle Ages, ordinary folks ate their primary meal of the day late in the morning after several hours of labor. Lunch could happen anytime between late morning and mid-afternoon in the early to the mid-17th century. This was before electricity allowed us to spend more time awake in the evening.

This meal was increasingly pushed back into the evening throughout the late 17th and 18th centuries, producing a larger time gap between breakfast and supper. Lunch was brought in to fill the void between the main meals of breakfast and supper.

With the advent of industrialization in the nineteenth century, male factory employees began to work long shifts, drastically altering eating patterns. Workers being sent home for a quick supper prepared by their wives, but as the job became further away from their houses, working men began to bring something handy to eat during a midday break. The “lunch break” as we know it was born out of the industrial labor hours.

Lunch is the primary meal or dinner in many nations and regions. Predetermined lunchtimes allow employees to dine with their families at home. As a result, in places where lunch is the major meal of the day, businesses close at midday. You see this all the time in Italy if you’ve ever traveled there.
