Some More Facts About Chocolate

Eager to learn more about this industry? Here are some of the most staggering facts and stats we’ve uncovered in this market.

  • It takes around 400 cocoa beans to make a pound of chocolate. This is according to the National Confectioners Association. To illustrate, one bar of Hershey’s chocolate measures 1.55 ounces. In weight comparison, there are 16 ounces in every pound. As such, you can make 10 Hershey’s bars in one pound which means you’ll use 40 cocoa beans for each bar.
  • Switzerland is still the world’s most chocolate hungry nation. Americans do love their chocolate, in fact, we have a lot of reasons why (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s, and Easter). But in terms of average consumption per person, Switzerland still heads the list with 19.4
  • Premium chocolates are steadily growing despite big chocolate companies’ dominance of the market. Premium chocolates are described as chocolates priced more than $1.50 each ounce or $24 per pound, have reached $55 million in 2016, a 15.4% increase from the previous year.
  • An average Cacao tree can produce fruits that can yield 1 to 3 pounds of chocolate each year. A Cacao tree typically bears 20 – 30 pods (fruit) each year. A pod usually contains 20 – 30 cocoa beans inside. Thus, if one Cacao tree produces between 400 to 1,200 beans and each pound needs 400 cocoa beans, you can produce in between 1 to 3 pounds of chocolate in one Cacao tree per year.
  • Cacao farmers continue to earn less than $1 per day despite the industry’s size. This is a continuing issue about what cacao farmers take home each day despite the booming chocolate industry. Even though these farmers perform the physical hard work of harvesting cocoa beans, they only take approximately only 6% of the price of a chocolate bar compared to the roughly 80% being taken in by the manufacturers and retailers.
  • The Ivory Coast continues to be the world’s leading cacao producer. The country is considered the largest cocoa bean exporter in the world. It was estimated in 2018 that the cacao harvest will hit 2.12 million metric tons of cacao in 2019.
