If you ask older Millennials (like me) and all the generations above, soft drinks were the go-to beverage to quench thirst in the past. Growing up, you could find soda machines placed inside schools and marketed pretty much everywhere, including television and billboards.

Today, soft drink consumption has declined since 2000. Due to the health concerns with consuming sugary drinks and the increase in widely available beverage options like teas, bottled waters, juices, energy drinks, and coffees to name a few.

In recent years, the same beverage companies that manufactured soft drinks shifted their beverage products to healthier drinks. Take for example, PepsiCo, Inc., the global multinational food and snack brand that generates more than $70 billion in revenue per year. This company shifted from selling cans of Pepsi to becoming more of an umbrella brand like Aquafina, Gatorade, and Lipton.

“I want summer to last forever for these reasons: 1. Hair gets lighter. 2. Skin gets darker. 3. Water gets warmer. 4. Drinks get colder. 5. Music gets louder. 6. Nights get longer. 7. Life gets better.” – Anonymous

Just to be clear, the soft drink we’re talking about is the beverage made out of water (typically carbonated), a sweetener, and natural or artificial flavors. Sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, a sugar replacement (in diet drinks), or a mix of these can be used as a sweetener. Caffeine, colors, preservatives, and/or other substances are other ingredients included in soft drinks. You can view more statistics about the soft-drink industry here.
