Newspaper Industry Statistics

Know more about newspapers with these statistics.

Accurate news is important to help us all understand what’s happening in the world. Timely news coverage helps us stay protect us from nearby violence, the change in weather, who’s running for office locally, and inflation prices.

But as mentioned above, the traditional newspaper industry doesn’t have the human capital to provide deep analysis on these subjects any long. Here are some newspaper statistics for you to check out to help you understand the state of the industry better.

  • Nearly 30% of adults in the US go to social media regularly for news.
  • USA Today was always known as the newspaper that had the highest number of circulation daily. But in the first quarter of 2020, The Wall Street Journal was able to overtake them with 994,600 copies distributed.
  • 34% of adults in the US in 2018 preferred to receive their news online.
  • People in Norway pay more for digital news content. Over 42% paid to read news online in 2020.
  • There is a decline in printed newspapers whereas social media continues to rise.
  • 47% of the age group of 45 to 54 year olds depends on the local news for information.
  • In 2020, 35% of people in the US favored getting their news from TV.
  • Fake news has become so alarming that 56% of the population around the world worry about them.

But despite this sad news, it shouldn’t discourage you from starting our own newspaper business. Quite to the contrary. With the void in local news coverage, brings with it the opportunity for a scrappy upstarts like you to replace them. As an example, non-traditional journalism startups like TheAthletic.com have come in to fill the void in local sports markets.

As newspapers cut staff writers, TheAthletic.com hired many of these laid off writers to provide ongoing coverage of smaller market sports teams and hit 1 million paying subscribers in 2020. There are similar opportunities that could be filled with local political news, arts coverage, and restaurant reviews.

Online newspapers also turn a profit through paid subscriptions of content or by running advertising alongside published content. An estimated 20% of readers in the United States paid to read their favorite digital news source. All profit opportunities are not lost should you wish to switch to a digital platform. But your newsroom will look different than it did 30 years ago.
