In spite of the rapid digitization of most paper products like books and magazines, the stationery industry remains a vibrant business sector valued at $25 billion a year. What’s even more interesting is the industry is expected to grow 1.4% per annum over the next four years. This is at the same time other paper media is on the decline due to the growth of digital media.

But why is stationery seeing growth while other media like print books on the decline? For certain products, many of us still enjoy being able to touch, hold and smell physical product. Sending hand-written stationery expresses a different level of thoughtfulness than printed paper. After all, it takes time and effort to write and send a letter or postcard with quality penmanship. There’s a sense of nostalgia trigged when you get a hand-written letter delivered in the mail.

The market for retail stationery products lies jointly with online and physical stores. If you’re a startup though, you’re going to want to be selling your products through social media, an e-commerce website, or on platforms like KickStarter. If you’re thinking about starting an online or retail stationery shop, these are the most inspiring name ideas we compiled based organized into six categories. Stick around until the end of the article and I’ll reveal the exact stationery business I plan to launch.

Stationery Shop Name Ideas

Vintage stationery shop.

While the digital age reduced the amount of physical books, posters and paper products sold in America. But the declines haven’t been even across the board for printed media. For example, cookbook publishing is experiencing a resurgence in the last decade. When it comes to cooking, plenty of people still like to crack open a book to follow the recipe. People feel the same way about stationery like annual planners and postcards. Here are the best name ideas we came up with for an online stationery shop.

Tips for Naming Your Stationery Business

How to name a stationery brand.

The stationery market is a unique business and a little old-fashioned in the era of digital media. But that doesn’t mean you can’t start a successful stationery business. So here are a few tips on how to choose the right name for your own stationery business or appointment planner brand. As promised, I’ll be discussing my own stationery business idea here.

The first thing to do is check out the list of competitor brand names. Understanding the list of names to avoid will prevent you from going too far down the wrong path. You can also check out the brands or shops that appear to be most popular to identify gaps in the market and deliver a product that resonates with a certain part of the market.

As an example, I believe there’s a market for developing a food business planner that I could sell to the readers of this blog. This planner would guide people through the process of starting a business by help them organize their ideas in one location. The reason I believe this could be a winning product is I’ve seen the process pulled off successfully already in related entrepreneurial markets.

I’ve also seen a number of different business and motivational gurus selling similar products on Amazon. What stands out with my particular product is the handbook will be specific to people who want to start a food business. The planner will help guide people through the process of identifying a menu, researching suppliers, and accessing the total funds needed to start a business. As you can see, the target market I’ve identified is any person who wants to start a food business.

Another place I like to look for winning stationery ideas is by going to KickStarter. KickStarter has a section dedicated to crafts / stationery. This is an amazing place to find out what’s working in the market right now. Here are two campaigns in this category that really caught my eye:

  • Valentines Day Cards evoking laughter and smiles! Cleverly made Valentines Day Cards. This is something anyone could put their own spin on around any major holiday like Mother’s Day, Christmas, or Father’s Day. This little campaign idea raised $8,179 from 652 backers and was labeled as a staff pick.
  • Cat Greeting Cards: Mark from Washington, D.C., sold $6,425 worth of cat greeting cards with clever sayings like “chairman meow” and “meow is the time!”

If you want to learn more about launching a profitable crowdfunding campaign, check out this in-depth audio lesson on the subject. In this episode, we reveal the biggest mistakes in crowdfunding and how to avoid them.

As a final tip, get feedback from people you know and respect on your new business name. Share the name ideas with friends and family. But don’t ask for their opinion. Instead, come back two weeks later and see if your buddies can remember the name. This will give you an honest gauge of how well your idea might stick. If you identify a name people can actually remember, you can be more confident in a decision to move forward.
