Why Is Self-Awareness Important for Business Leaders?

In my opinion Howard Schultz, the former CEO and chairman of Starbucks, is a prime example of how self-awareness can drive business success. Schultz grew up in a poor housing complex in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, New York. His early experiences with poverty instilled in him a deep sense of empathy and a desire to build a company that treated its employees with dignity and respect.

  1. Employee Benefits: Schultz’s personal experiences influenced his decision to offer comprehensive health benefits to all Starbucks employees, including part-time workers, back in the late 1980s. This was virtually unheard of in the retail industry at the time. Schultz recognized the struggles his family faced without health insurance and wanted to ensure his employees didn’t face the same challenges. This decision not only improved the lives of Starbucks employees but also led to increased loyalty and reduced turnover, benefiting the company in the long run.
  2. Bean Stock Program: Schultz introduced the Bean Stock program, which granted stock options to employees, allowing them to share in the company’s success. This initiative was rooted in Schultz’s belief that everyone in the company, from baristas to managers, played a crucial role in its success and should be recognized and rewarded for it.
  3. Focus on Community and Connection: Schultz envisioned Starbucks not just as a place to grab a coffee, but as a “third place” between work and home—a place for community and connection. This vision was influenced by his travels to Italy, where he observed the central role of coffee shops in community life. Schultz’s self-awareness about the universal human need for connection drove many of Starbucks’ policies and store designs, emphasizing comfort, community, and a sense of belonging.

Truly, in the case of Starbucks, Schultz’s elite levels of self-awareness helped make Starbucks one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

What Have I done to Become More Self-Aware?

For over a decade, I’ve been writing on this food business blog, diving into everything from the financial side of food trucks to hot dog carts. But earlier this year, something felt off. My readership was on a decline, and I was left scratching my head, wondering why.

Determined to become more self-aware and elevate my blogging game, I decided to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Here’s what I started to do.

Every night, I began to journal, introspecting on my daily interactions, choices, and emotions. One entry amusingly read, “Memo to self: Not everyone is as passionate about the fermentation process of kimchi. Maybe mix it up a bit?”

I reached out to my readers by email for feedback. The responses were a revelation. “Brett, adore your content, but how about some modern cooking tech mixed in with the vintage vibes?” one reader suggested. Another cheekily commented, “Ever considered a fashion segment? I need a new apron!”

journals for reflection

These are only two of the journals I’ve started filling up with my thoughts.

To further my quest for self-awareness, I enrolled in a mindfulness course. During a meditation session, as I tried to concentrate on my breathing, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of using typewriters for jotting down modern recipes.

As time progressed, I felt a shift. I was not only more attuned to what my readers desired but also more flexible and receptive to change. I diversified my blog topics and started writing about a broader range of topics that interested me like this one about self reflection and others about overcoming adversity.

The most profound impact of my journey into self-awareness was the genuine connection I forged with my audience. While I remained passionate about the intricacies of the food business, it was my authentic, quirky, and self-aware persona that truly resonated with my readers.

By becoming more self-aware, you can better understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Improved self-awareness helps you make better decisions; interact with others more effectively. If you’re anything like me, all this self work might make you feel a little better too.
