My signs of frustration?

Believe it or not, yours truly still gets frustrated about things. Just last week, I was faced with some of my triggers known triggers that came in the form of an unexpected bills and time request.

It was a Monday morning. The sun was already shining promising a day of productivity and progress. I had my to-do list ready, a fresh Starbucks dark roast by my side, and an unwavering determination to get some deep writing done. Little did I know, the universe had other plans for me.

The first sign of trouble came when I tried to access this blog. A glaring error message stared back at me stating the website was not currently available due to server issues. Technical challenges have always been a thorn in my side, and today was no exception. I spent hours on the phone with customer support, only to be met with more questions than answers. The clock was ticking, and my frustration was mounting as I knew loyal readers weren’t able to access the website.

writing down my triggers

Writing down my triggers in an notebook allows me to identify the problem and solution.

Just as I was about to make a breakthrough, my phone buzzed with a text message. It was from my sister, asking if I could watch her kids for the afternoon. Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore my nieces. But the timing couldn’t have been worse. I was already behind schedule, and the thought of adding childcare to my already overflowing plate was overwhelming.

To add to the chaos, an unexpected tax bill arrived in the mail for $5,329. Financial pressures are always a trigger for me, and this was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt a wave of frustration wash over me. It felt like the universe was conspiring against me.

I took a deep breath and decided to step away from it all. I needed a moment. When I feel frustrated, I’ve learned to take a break from it all, get outside, and go for a run to burn off the anxiety. I realized that while I couldn’t control the external challenges that came my way, I could control my response to them.

I decided to make a change. Instead of allowing these triggers to consume me, I would use them as opportunities for growth. First, I asked my wife to watch my sisters kids for the day and explained to her my situation and urgency around solving the website tech issues. This 5-minute conversation immediately took one of the issues off my plate.

Next feeling overwhelmed, I contacted a technical expert to solve the server issue. Fortunately, this person was able to solve the problem within a 3 hours without too much of my own involvement. The tech person also set systems and checks in place to prevent this issue in the future.

After that, the only problem left in my way was to pay off my unexpected tax bill. Fortunately, this didn’t need to be paid for 2 months into the future so I had plenty of time to write out the check and send it off.

Over time, I learned to embrace my triggers, using them as a reminder to pause, reflect, and recalibrate. While I’m not always proud of my initial reactions, I’ve come to understand that it’s okay to feel frustrated. What’s important is how we move forward from those moments of frustration.

How can you react to frustrations in a positive way?

In the tumultuous journey of entrepreneurship and life, frustrations are inevitable. But amidst this chaos, I discovered a powerful tool that transformed my perspective and became my anchor: gratitude.

Now, I know it might sound clichéd or even a tad bit lame. After all, in a world that constantly pushes us to want more, to achieve more, how can something as simple as feeling grateful make a difference? But trust me, it does, and in ways more profound than one can imagine.
