What is a Hipster?

Even coffee hipsters exist.

If you’re confused as to what a hipster means, well that’s understandable since there’s seemingly no one official definition for it. In simple terms, a hipster is an individual who is a part of a subculture, knows all about it, and continues to learn more about it, but also does not belong to the mainstream ideas of that culture. It’s like standing out but also fitting right in. Hipsters are usually millennials born between 1981 and 1996.

Confused? So are a bunch of us. But let’s put it this way: hipster people can range from loving music (but only the indie or underground ones), enjoying books (but only the ones written by up and coming authors), and being fashionable (but with a flair for the unique styles that may or may not be in the current fashion trends). Hipster people are unique and stand out from the usual crowd. More often then not they could be sporting a non-ironic mustache.

What is a Hippie?

Hippies love music.

A hippie is not to be confused with a hipster. Originally, a hippie was someone who was part of a movement during the 1960s and 1970s. The movement involved the rejection of the mainstream American lifestyle. They were not necessarily activists. But they spoke out against violence, materialism, unhealthy food, and advocated for peace, healthy living, and vegetarian diets instead. Men grew their beads. Women wore long flowing dresses. Sandals were worn and beads were the common jewelry. Astrology, music, and hallucinogenic drugs were also commonly practiced by them.

Modern-day hippies still exist. Many of them are likely the parents of hipsters at this point. Though the term is probably mixed with something else and each one focuses on its own subculture.

What is a Gypsy?

A Vardo is a wagon used by the Roma people to travel.

A gypsy is neither a hippie nor a hipster. In fact, we should stop using the term gypsy since it’s considered offensive. The real way to acknowledge them is to know that they are Roma or Romani (or Romany), an ethnic group with roots from India that live in Europe and America. They have a “migratory nature” and they have a rich culture wherein music plays a big part in it which is probably where the stereotype of them being traveling street performers came from.

These are a free spirited group of people that share a lot of beliefs and values of the modern van life movement. The van life movement is a group of people that have denied the traditional path of working a 9-to-5 job for 40 years and instead of buying a house with a 30 year mortgage, they put their life into a mobile unit to reduce expenses and travel. This group could be considered modern day gypsies.
