Brief History of Jazz Clubs

piano

Playing the piano.

The jazz genre didn’t exist until the turn of the 19th century. Rich white Americans used to listen to classical concert music; music played at performances such as ballet and opera; and ballroom music. Enjoying these kinds of music was a formal affair, and these people went to venues such as opera houses and grand ballrooms.

On the other hand, African-American communities practiced informal music performances such as church music, music played in the park, or brass band performances during funerals. Along these, African-Americans were fond of communal activities for informal sharing such as picnics and Saturday family nights.

It was in New Orleans where jazz really took off. Early jazz players performed in brothels and bars of the red-light district. Soon, Americans became interested in this interesting African-American music and demanded more performances in bigger, more accessible, and formal venues.

Early jazz clubs were often spacious rooms, especially in the era of orchestral and big band jazz. Since jazz was considered dance music, the early bars often have big dance floors. Later in the 1940s when Bebop and soul jazz became popular, jazz music became something that people listen to rather than danced to. As such, smaller clubs were established and became popular.

Jazz clubs can be found in basements of large residential buildings, storefront locations, upper floors of commercial businesses, and stand-alone establishments on the street side. Generally, they’re smaller than other music venues such as discos or rock music clubs, which emphasizes a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere.

Finally, jazz clubs have regular players, but there are those that offer jam sessions. During jam sessions, professional and amateur jazz players are invited to perform on the stage.
