Owning a biker bar may be a lifelong dream for your retirement after a life of riding the open road. Or maybe you have a desire to provide a safe place for riders to gather. Believe it or not, biker bars remain a viable business idea with more than eight million motorcycles rolling along the roads in the U.S. according to the Department of Transportation.

While biker bars have been portrayed as dangerous places in movies over the past few decades, the reality these water holes are places where people from all walks of life can feel right at home.

Naming your biker bar is not going to be as hard as you think. Bikers have been around for as long as there have been motorcycles, and biker bars for almost as long.

One of the most famous around the world is the Ace Café, on the North Circular Route in London, popular from the 1930s to the late ‘60s. Bikers are well known for liking a rest stop with good food, plenty of cold beer, and a friendly atmosphere.

However, taking the time to come up with a memorable business name remains worthwhile… Especially when you consider the off-center sense of humor of many riders. And as long as it is not ridiculous, even strange and obnoxious names can capture the imagination of the biker culture and community.

How To Name Your Biker Bar

pioneer saloon

The Pioneer Saloon.

If you’re still stuck on your biker bar brand, don’t be concerned. There are plenty of naming approaches that can help you out. Whether you are an old dog or just a biker-friendly business-person, it is important that you give your biker bar a good name, and one that can be remembered well far into the future and far across the country.

The first thing to consider is your clientele. Since they are mostly going to be bikers then having a name that appeals to them is probably the most important aspect of naming your bar. While it may be nice to call it Bob’s Bar, it really doesn’t convey the message you want it to. Bob’s Biker Bar, however, says it all. Using your own first or last name is a time-tested way to come up with a business name.

But while it does need to convey that biker-friendly message, it does not actually need to say “biker bar”. Alliterations are just as good. The Handle Bar tells you what it is, just as The Rusty Chain, Chopperz, or The Black Widows Bar does. All of these are easily recognizable as being biker-friendly names, which any biker would quickly recognize. Write down a list of motorcycle parts and components to start your search.

A short and simple name is best for most bars. But there are some exceptions when naming a biker bar. A short name is easy to remember, but if you have a title that bikers are unlikely to forget, it can be longer. After all, the Full Throttle Saloon & Campground (Sturgis, South Dakota) is one of the most famous biker bars in the U.S., not to mention the largest.

Naming the bar in conjunction with a club is another good idea, especially if the bike club you name it for are going to be your main patrons throughout the year. Bike clubs often use local bars as a clubhouse and can be a major source of income, especially if the group has a lot of members. Being affiliated can be a bonus, and the bar makes the ideal place for new recruits to get aquatinted with the lifestyle and atmosphere.
