Spanish for “Fifth of May” and an annual celebration to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory over the French on May 5 1862, Cinco de Mayo is actually more popular in the United States than it’s ever been in Mexico. The celebration rose in popularity during the 1980s, largely due to its use in beer and tequila company advertising and generates more beer sales than the SuperBowl. For many, holiday is synonymous as a celebration of Mexican culture. Some people even believe this is Mexican Independence Day, which is a common misconception.

While it may not be a traditional Mexican food experience, I still enjoyed it. No matter how you plan to celebrate, stay safe out there this May, 5th.
