Is Whataburger planning to expand?

Whataburger has shown a strong intent to expand its footprint after selling the majority of interest in the company to Goldman Sachs in 2019. The company plans to open at least 80 new stores in Georgia and Alabama over the next five years.

The fast-food chain entered Georgia in November with a store near Kennesaw State University and has since opened an additional four in the Atlanta area. Whataburger plans to open at least 50 more in Georgia over the next five years. In Alabama, where the burger chain currently operates 29 stores, it aims to open another 30 by 2027.

Whataburger is also set to expand its presence in Northeast Florida with plans to more than double its restaurant count in the Jacksonville area. The company has partnered with franchisee Silvercreek Group LLC to open 12 new Whataburger restaurants in the area by the end of 2027.

The expansion is part of a broader trend of fast-food chains, including In-N-Out Burger and Raising Cane’s, as well as coffee shops like Dutch Bros aggressively expanding nationwide. Established quick-service restaurants like Chick-Fil-A are also renovating outdated properties and constructing new stores with additional drive-thru lanes.

Whataburger is partnering with franchisee Made to Order Holdings for its Atlanta expansion. The company’s newest Georgia store opened in April in Cumming, with other cities like Covington, Dawsonville, Monroe, Newnan, Smyrna, Snellville, and a second store in Kennesaw on its expansion list. In Alabama, the company plans to open stores this year in Albertville, Cullman, Hazel Green, Huntsville, Madison, and Scottsboro. So the good news is if you live in the states of Alabama, Florida, or Georgia you could have a Whataburger coming to your neighborhood in the next few years.

Will Whataburger come to California?

Whataburger does not have any locations in California. The fast-food chain, which originated in Corpus Christi, Texas, currently operates in 10 states, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida, but has not yet expanded to the West Coast.

The reasons for this include the high cost of doing business in California, which includes high taxes and labor costs, and the highly competitive fast-food market in the state, which already has many established chains. There are also logistic and brand awareness considerations when opening in a new market like California. At this time, the expansion efforts of Whataburger seem to be focused in the Southeast United States.

Free Whataburger Offer & Other Discounts

Want a free Whataburger? Who wouldn’t? New members of the Whataburger Rewards Program receive a free Whataburger. This offer is a welcome gift for signing up for the program. Of course, there are some other benefits to joining this loyalty program as well.

For every $1 spent at Whataburger, you earn 10 points that can be redeemed for free food. This points-based system is a shift from the previous visit-based rewards system, offering more rewards per dollar spent on average. After examining the prices on the menu and the value of reward points, I estimate the discount rate of joining this program ranges from 5.8% – 8.3%. In other words, joining Whataburger Rewards is a total no-brainer if you dine here regularly.

It won’t take long for you to start earning free food either. In fact there are 14 items you can choose from in the 200 – 399 points range, meaning you’ll qualify for a free item after only $20 – $40 in spend. These free items include a cookie, brownie, apple slices, and a variety of drinks. After you reach 1000 points or $100 in spend, you’ll be eligible for free entrees like a Whataburger, Double Meat Whataburger Jr., or Spicy Chicken Sandwich. View a full list of all the menu items you can earn points toward at the official Whataburger website.

What is a Burger Box at Whataburger?

A Burger Box at Whataburger is literally a box full of burgers, may that be two, three, or more. In 2022, Whataburger released a build-your-own burger box that can feed up to 10 people. The burger box is complete with 10 Whataburgers that come complete with condiments.

You can also choose to have the double meat burgers for an additional charge. As usual, you can customize your order depending on your preference.

An onion ring has never looked this yummy.

Is Whataburger owned by Burger King?

Whataburger is not owned by Burger King. Whataburger is a family-owned company that sold a majority stake to BDT Capital Partners, a Chicago-based investment firm, and the merchant banking division of Goldman Sachs in 2019.

On the other hand, Burger King is part of Restaurant Brands International, which is a Canadian multinational fast food holding company formed by the merger of Burger King and Canadian coffee shop chain Tim Hortons in 2014, and expanded by the acquisition of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in 2017.

What is the number 13 at Whataburger?

The number 13 at Whataburger is the $16.69 Whatachick’n Strips 3 pcs Meal. Included in this meal are 3 juicy and tender breaded 100% chicken breast strips with Texas toast, and is served with a choice of dipping sauces which are Buffalo sauce, Honey BBQ, Honey Mustard, Cream Gravy, Creamy Pepper, Honey Butter, Ranch, Fat-free Ranch, Jalapeno  Ranch, and Whatasauce.

If the customer wants more sauce, they can easily purchase extra dipping sauce for an extra 70 cents. The meal also comes with a side where the choices are Medium Fries, Large Fries at an additional $0.80, or Apple Slices.

A drink is included in this meal, too. There are several choices available from the list of drinks at Whataburger and these are the 32 oz. Sweet/ Unsweet Tea, Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Barq’s Root Beer, Minute Maid, Powerade, and Fanta. An additional $0.80 has to be shelled out if a customer prefers a large drink.

What comes standard on a Whataburger?

If you’re a first-timer at a Whataburger location, here’s what you can expect to be included on a standard Whataburger:

  • A large, 100% pure American beef patty cooked fresh when you order
  • A toasted five-inch bun
  • Mustard
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Pickles
  • Diced onions

It’s worth noting that Whataburger is all about customization so you can add or remove any toppings as you please. And customization is what Whataburger prides itself on and makes it stand out from the competition. Because you have limited customization options when you place an order at McDonald’s, right? For most famous fast food chains, you only get exactly what is on their menu, no more, no less.

A picnic sounds good with this Whataburger meal.

What is the most unhealthy thing you could order at Whataburger?

One of the most calorically dense items on the Whataburger menu is the “Triple Meat Whataburger.” This burger includes three 100% pure American beef patties, making it a high-calorie choice. Whataburger Secret Menu

Whataburger, like many other fast-food restaurants, doesn’t officially recognize a “secret menu.” However, loyal customers and food enthusiasts have created their own by customizing regular menu items or asking for less-known combinations like the ones I’ve provided below.

Grilled Cheese with Grilled Vegetables – You can upgrade your basic grilled cheese sandwich by asking them to add grilled vegetables for an added flavor punch.

Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich on Texas Toast –  This combines a customer favorite (the Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich) with another (the Texas Toast served with the Patty Melt).

Chicken and Pancakes – During breakfast hours, you could order pancakes and a chicken strip separately and combine them to make your own version of the classic chicken and waffles dish.

Apple Pie Milkshake – This involves purchasing an apple pie and a milkshake separately, then combine the two into something brand new.

Bunless Whataburger – For those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet, you might opt for a bunless burger. You can typically request this at any burger restaurant, not just Whataburger.

Breakfast on a Bun Ranchero – Order the “Breakfast on a Bun” and ask for some picante sauce and jalapenos. Now you have the Ranchero version.

If you’re looking to try something new and veer away from your usual Whataburger orders, make sure to save this list of secret menu items so you can try them out the next time you visit a location.

Whataburger was founded in 1950 by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dobson had a bold idea: to serve a burger so big that it took two hands to hold, and so good that after a single bite customers would say, “What a burger!” He partnered with Burton, and they leased a small building on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi. On the first day, the stand sold out of burgers at 25 cents a piece. From that successful start, Whataburger grew quickly. After Dobson died in 1967, his wife Grace took over the company and continued to grow the brand.

There are more than 900 Whataburger stores across the Southern United States from Arizona to Florida. Texas, being its home state, has the highest concentration of Whataburger locations and it’s particularly beloved there. While the majority of Whataburger locations are in the South, the chain has been gradually expanding to other states.
