Dutch Bros offers a unique drive-through experience that builds deep connections with local communities through fundraising efforts like Dutch Luv Day where every February $1 from every drink sold is donated to local organizations working to fight food insecurity. The menu features a variety of unique coffee drinks and flavored energy drinks, further distinguishing it from typical coffee chains.

Here are the latest Dutch Bros menu prices in 2023. Like every other coffee chain, Dutch Bros has increased prices over the past 2 years. But there are still some good ways to save money on your favorite caffeinated beverage if you’re in the know.

Why did Dutch Bros need to increase menu prices?

Dutch Bros says they were forced to increase menu prices by 11% the past two years due to increased costs associated with higher labor and coffee costs. But does this add up according to the companies publicly available financial documents in the FDD?

Here is a breakdown of the dollar amount primary expenses for Dutch Bros for 2021 vs 2022:

Cost 2021 2022 Change
Cost of Goods Sold $168,434,000 $224,332,000 32.50%
Labor Costs $105,522,000 $132,156,000 25.10%
Overhead Costs $62,300,000 $74,356,000 19.50%

As you can see, all three categories of expenses increased in 2022. The increase in COGS was due to rising costs of ingredients including coffee beans, the increase in labor costs was due to rising minimum wages and increased competition for workers, and the increase in overhead costs was largely due to rising rent, utilities, and insurance costs.

While customers never want to pay higher prices for the same goods and service, the reality every business needs to operate profitably longterm if they want to continue to remain in business.

Will Dutch Bros increase prices even further? In an interview with Restaurant Business Online, Dutch Bros CEO Joth Ricci said that the company is “sensitive to the consumer” and that they are “right on the line of where we should be” with pricing. Ricci also said that the company believes that its costs are at peak and should be easier this year.

But the CEO also acknowledged that the company is facing some challenges in terms of rising costs. He said that there are “a lot of challenges to profitability” and that the company is “always looking at ways to reduce costs.” Overall, it is too early to say whether or not Dutch Bros will increase prices further in 2023. The company will likely remain flexible and update prices based on consumer behavior, competitors, and of course operating expenses.

Is Dutch Bros Cheaper than Starbucks?

While Dutch Bros isn’t as big as Starbucks, the coffee chain has similar pricing to Starbucks but is still cheaper if you look at their pricing side by side.

Prices can vary by location, but generally speaking, Dutch Bros Coffee and Starbucks have comparable pricing for their drinks. Some items might be slightly cheaper at one versus the other, depending on the specific drink and size. Here are some examples of price differences between a few similar items:

1. Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks ($3.75) vs Golden Eagle at Dutch Bros ($3.75):

  • Price difference: $0 (both are $3.75)
  • Percentage difference: 0%

2. Freshly Brewed Coffee (Tall) at Starbucks- $1.85 vs Americano (Small) at Dutch Bros – $1.50

The price difference for a regular coffee between Starbucks and Dutch Bros is $0.35 with Starbucks being or 18.92% more expensive for this item.

3. Iced Tea (Tall) at Starbucks vs Dutch Tea (Small) at Dutch Bros:

  • Price difference: $2.25 – $1.75 = $0.50 (Dutch Bros is more expensive)

However, Dutch Bros often offers a wider range of flavor customizations at no extra cost, which some customers might perceive as providing better value for money. Starbucks frequently charges $0.75 for customizations including alternative dairy creamers like oat milk. In fact, Starbucks generates more than $1 billion in revenue each year from add-ons and special flavors like this.

Also, Dutch Bros has a reputation for its generous customer service, sometimes providing free drinks for first-time customers or others on special occasions.

What are the drink sizes at Dutch Bros?

Just like Starbucks, Dutch Bros offers 3 different sizing for its beverages, however, they give them a straight forward name of Small, Medium, and Large, compared to Starbucks’ Tall, Grande, and Venti.

Dutch Bros Coffee beverage sizes are as follows:

  • Small (12 ounces)
  • Medium (16 ounces)
  • Large (20 ounces)

These sizes apply to both their hot and iced beverages. Dutch Bros also serves “Dutch Bros Blue Rebel” energy drinks, which are typically available in 16, 24, and 32-ounce sizes.

Does Dutch Bros have a secret menu?

Dutch Bros Coffee is known to have an “unofficial” secret menu similar to other coffee chains. The secret menu isn’t something that’s officially acknowledged or advertised by the company, but it’s something that has grown organically from the creativity of baristas and customers alike.

The secret menu includes unique drink combinations and flavors that aren’t listed on the standard menu.

  • Caramelizer: A mocha with a twist of caramel.
  • Annihilator: A flavorful mix of chocolate macadamia nut flavoring, cold milk, and a shot of espresso.
  • Dutch Mojito: An iced green tea with lime and coconut flavoring.
  • 911: An extremely strong coffee drink with six shots of three-bean Irish cream espresso.
  • White Zombie: This is a mix of white chocolate and vanilla, blended with milk and espresso.
  • Bob: Essentially a Caramelizer with an added hint of banana flavor.
  • Dirty Caterpillar: A green apple and caramel smoothie.
  • Double Rainbro: A rebel energy drink infused with a random mixture of flavors.
  • Flapjack Breve: This is a breve latte with maple syrup, cinnamon, and hazelnut syrup.
  • Gummy Bear Rebel: An energy drink that tastes like gummy bears, usually made with white chocolate, kiwi, and lime.
  • Ninja Turtle: A mocha made with a mixture of chocolate and caramel, along with a shot of macadamia nut flavoring.

Ways to Save money at Dutch Bros

Free Birthday Drink – Go visit Dutch Bros on your birthday and get a free drink! Don’t forget to bring an ID because no ID means no free drink. I don’t make the rules here, Dutch Bros do.

Free 16 oz with Text Club – When you sign up for Dutch Bros’ Text Club you get a free 16oz drink. There is a different text club for each region so make sure to specify your accurate location upon sign up.

Buy a Gift Card – Dutch Bros is offering 10% OFF for any amount of their gift cards. So, while it’s nice to go and buy a gift card for a friend or a family member, you can love yourself more and buy it for yourself.

Military or Mug Discount – You get a 10-cent discount for every order if you are a military or if you bring your own Dutch Bros mug or any mug with a Dutch Bros sticker which is actually free every month. Having your own mug or tumbler (with a Dutch Bros sticker) also saves plastic and shows you love mother earth so I suggest doing this more often as you can save the earth, and save 10 cents on your drink!

Order a small iced drink – Did you know that a small iced coffee, whether that’s a latte, americano, or mocha, has the same amount of espresso (which is a double shot) when you order a medium-sized drink? The only additional thing you’re paying for with a medium-sized drink is either milk or water. So, if you’re after the caffeine, I think it is safe to go with a small-sized drink because you get your caffeine and you save 50 cents. 50 cents can go a long way if you add that up to a year’s worth of coffee!

Order hand-blended drinks instead of blended ones – The fee you’re paying for blended drinks are higher because you are also paying for a Freeze which is priced accordingly based on the size of your drink. But if you don’t mind the texture, you can order your “blended” drink by getting one that is hand-blended. It will taste the same but will cost less because you didn’t have the Freeze.

Dutch Rewards

Just like any other coffee shop, Dutch Bros has their own loyalty program called Dutch Rewards to give back to loyal customers and attract new ones. When you download the Dutch Bros app, you can use it to earn points, use those points to get free drinks, and be rewarded whenever you order your Dutch drink.

Some important things to note about Dutch Rewards:

You can earn points with every dollar you spent – The way you can earn points at Dutch Bros is so easy! With every dollar you spent, you earn 3 points. The sky is the limit!

You can still use earn points even when you buy your drink using a gift card. How awesome is that? So, even when you get a discount for using a gift card, you are still rewarded with points you can accumulate and turn into free drinks the next time you order.

Free drinks will expire in 180 days – If you have free drinks, which you’ll know by unlocking the “Free Medium Drink” or “Free Drink of Your Choice” under your point balance dial on the app, you need to claim them not more than 6 months since you earned them because free drinks expire in 180 days. So, don’t be shy! When you know you have a free drink to claim, use it immediately the next time you’re ordering at Dutch Bros!

Difference between Points and Rewards – Points add up with each order you make at Dutch Bros, while Rewards are usually free drinks, given when you reach a certain number of Points that you have accumulated.

How many points do I need for a reward? – This depends on what reward you’re aiming for. But you can get a free medium drink with 250 points and any other drink with 325 points.

Do points expire? Yes, just like your free drinks that expire after 180 days, your points also expire after 180 days since you earned them so it is better to always check your points and use them accordingly so you don’t miss out on rewards!

What is a soft top at Dutch Bros?

The term “Soft Top” at Dutch Bros Coffee refers to a drink that’s topped with a generous dollop of their flavorful Dutch Bros whip cream. The whipped cream adds a touch of sweetness and a softer texture, hence the term “soft top.” A soft top has an upcharge of 25 cents depending on your location.

This could be added to any of their hot, iced, or blended drinks as an extra, usually at the customer’s request. If ordering a drink with a “Soft Top” you’re essentially asking for whip cream on top of a drink.

What is the strongest coffee drink at Dutch Bros?

If you love coffee as much as I am and always need to have a strong cup to start your day, you will enjoy Dutch Bros’ 911 drink. It is reported to be one of the strongest coffee drinks on the Dutch Bros menu which contains six shots of three-bean Irish cream espresso.

Each shot of espresso typically contains around 64 milligrams of caffeine so this drink could contain around 384 milligrams of caffeine in total, making it one of the highest-caffeine options on their menu.

The exact caffeine content can vary depending on factors like the exact size of the espresso shot, but generally speaking, this drink would have a much higher caffeine content than a standard coffee or espresso drink due to the multiple shots.

How many shots are in an Annihilator?

The “Annihilator” is a popular drink at Dutch Bros Coffee that typically includes a flavored mix of chocolate macadamia nut, cold milk, and espresso.

The standard recipe for an Annihilator includes a varying number of espresso shots based on the size of the drink you order:

Dutch Bros Coffee is a publicly traded company trading under the ticker symbol BROS on the New York Stock Exchange. The chain is headquartered in Grants Pass, Oregon, United States. Dutch Bros was founded in 1992 by Dane and Travis Boersma. The brothers came from Dutch descent, hence the name “Dutch Bros.” The entrepreneurial brothers initially started out as dairy farmers but decided to experiment with a coffee business when industry changes affected their dairy business. From what I can tell that was a pretty smart pivot.

In the beginning, the Boersma brothers experimented with 100 pounds of coffee near their hometown, giving away most of it to gauge the interest of locals. The business turned out to be a success, and they started setting up drive-through coffee stands around town. Over time, the company expanded across the United States, becoming particularly popular in the Pacific Northwest.

As a side note, the company also places a strong emphasis on giving back to the community. The coffee chain regularly donates to local causes and host an annual “Drink One for Dane” day in honor of co-founder Dane Boersma, who passed away from ALS. All proceeds from this event go to supporting ALS research.

Dutch Bros also hosts Buck for Kids Day each September. Dutch Bros dedicates this day to giving $1 from every drink sold to nonprofit organizations helping create brighter futures for local kids. That’s coffee you can feel really good about drinking.
