Why Did In-N-Out Burger Increase Prices?

Like many other fast food chains and players in the fast food industry, In-N-Out Burger has increased its prices. The increase has been noticeably rapid the past 24 months. Here’s what the price increase on your favorite burgers and combos:

Menu Item 2022 Price
2023 Price Percentage Increase
Double-Double Burger$3.95$4.9024%
Cheeseburger$2.80$3.5025%
Hamburger$2.50$3.1526%
French Fries$1.85$2.1516%
Double Double Burger Combo #1$9.00$9.151.6%
Cheeseburger Combo #2$7.55$7.752.6%
Hamburger Combo #3$7.20$7.402.7%

There are only two menu items that didn’t increase in price according to our data. You can still order a coffee or milk for the exact same price as last year.

Other prices with very small changes include an order of French fries that only saw a $0.30 increase since last year. This still adds up to a 16% percent bump.

One of the reasons In-N-Out Burger needed to implement a price increase is to increase wages. It’s well known that In-N-Out pays there employees more than other fast-food restaurants on average. According to Indeed, a cashier makes $16.33 per hour on average while an associate can make $17.19 per hour. Employees able to work their way up to store manager could earn $124,064 annually.

In-N-Out Cheeseburger

In-N-Out Cheeseburger prices have gone up.

Food prices have increased all over the world, not only at In-N-Out Burger. A Consumer Price Index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics says food prices have increased by 11.4% from August 2021 to August 2022. These are due to various national and global factors In-N-Out Burger can’t control.

COVID-19 Pandemic disruptions
The COVID-19 pandemic caused massive disruptions in the global food supply chain. Production, processing, and retail were all affected even after 2 years, forcing suppliers and producers to increase their prices.

War between Russia and Ukraine
Both countries are major world producers of wheat. With the ongoing war, wheat exports are curtailed, and the world faces a shortage. This results in price increases on everything related to the wheat industry.

Economic sanctions on Russia
Western allies placed economic sanctions and bans on Russian imports. These include bans on oil and gas, which increased fuel and energy prices up to 23.8%. Higher fuel and energy prices affect everything, from transportation to food costs. In-N-Out Burger rely on trucks to deliver food daily to restaurant locations. When diesel prices increase, the restaurant ends up paying for transportation.

The sanctions also caused the global cost of fertilizer to soar, forcing farmers to increase their crop prices.

Climate change and pollution
Shifting weather changes, shifts in temperature, acid rain, water and air pollution, and other environmental factors have severely affected the arability of lands; some are even rendered unsuited for farming. Every year, billions of fertile topsoil blow off the ground, drastically reducing the size of arable lands and grazing grounds.

This makes growing crops more challenging. Farmers had to spend more to grow crops and nurture cattle and poultry. To sustain food supply, raw material producers have to increase their prices, which are passed on to consumers.

Can In-N-Out Burger Still Be Considered a Cheap Place to Eat?

Despite the price increases, In-N-Out Burger remains a low-cost dining option. Take for example my last visit to an In-N-Out location in Saint George, Utah. My family of four only paid $27.85 after tax for our dinner. I can’t tell you the last time that happened. You can still order combo meals for under $10, which is rare these days.

At In-N-Out there’s no expectation to tip either than can typically add 10% – 20% to your bill. There’s not even the option to add a tip when you checkout at the cash register. This is also rare considering large chains like Starbucks even ask for tips.

The chain’s management has instituted smart strategies that kept their prices affordable while paying employees higher wages than competitors. Their price-saving strategy primarily rests in their limited menu. By keeping the number of their menu items manageable, they can reduce their expenditures for raw ingredients.

In-N-Out Burger

Kids love the free In-N-Out Burger hat and stickers. Just ask for them.

They also purchase beef wholesale and grind the beef in-house. Their sourcing and distribution are also done in-house. Altogether, these save the company 3% to 5% in food costs annually using this strategy.

Another reason why In-N-Out Burger was able to save on costs and keep prices low is that it owns most of its properties, many of which were purchased years ago. They don’t have to pay rent for these spaces that likely increased over the years.

In addition, the chain carefully and strategically chooses their locations, usually putting them in clusters and close to highways. In doing so, they lower fuel and delivery costs while avoiding higher rents or leases in urban centers.

Is McDonald’s More Expensive Than In-N-Out?

The giant McDonald’s fast-food chain is one of In-N-Out Burger’s competitors. As such, people often compare the Big Mac to the Double-Double.

The price of a Big Mac is $3.80 in 2021. It comes a little cheaper than the Double-Double which is presently pegged at $4.90. However, the Double-Double has thicker patties and has more lettuce, onion, tomatoes, and spread. You can count on the Double-Double being more expertly crafted as well.

Animal Style Fries

My order of “Animal Style” fries.

A combo meal from McDonald’s that has a double cheeseburger, medium fries, and a medium soft drink costs around $9.87 tax excluded. Using this comparison a Combo #1 at In-N-Out is $0.72 less expensive and you still get a double cheeseburger, medium fries and drink.

In general, it seems that when it comes to single items, McDonald’s is more inexpensive although their burgers are less voluminous than In-and-Out’s. In-N-Out is clearly a better overall value when it comes to combo meals in my opinion.

Is In-N-Out Burger Healthier than McDonald’s?

According to customers, the food served in In-N-Out Burger outlets is often viewed as healthier than McDonald’s even though they serve a similar menu.

At 440 calories without the toppings, an In-N-Out burger has a lower fat content and calories. Food is prepared fresh and cooked in 100% vegetable oil. Compare that to McDonald’s burgers which arrive at a McDonald’s outlet pre-frozen. In addition, In-N-Out Burger patties are 100% USDA-inspected pure beef and 96% lean. McDonald’s patties, on the other hand, are a mix of pork, beef, and additives.

In-N-Out Burgers fillings are also healthier as they’re made of fresh, natural ingredients. These include hand-leafed lettuce, thick tomatoes and onions, and freshly baked buns.

plain grilled cheese

A plain grilled cheese order at In-N-Out.

In-N-Out also has healthier burger options, specifically their Protein Style burger. Rather than the normal bunds, this menu item uses lettuce wraps. You also get to choose the ingredients you want in the burger.

In-N-Out’s fries, made of real potatoes, taste less salty than those of McDonald’s. With no added fat, they taste less greasy than those of McDonald’s.

Finally, In-N-Out Burger’s menu is simpler and has fewer items than McDonald’s. This makes it easier for patrons to choose healthier options. For instance, in In-N-Out, your toppings are limited to lettuce, onion, and tomato. In McDonald’s, your burgers can be covered with more variety of special sauces and cheese, which increases calories.

How Much Does the 3×3 Burger Cost at In-N-Out?

The 3X3 Burger has a price tag of $5.45 and is part of the restaurant’s “secret menu.” It is made of three pieces of 100% pure beef patties with three slices of American cheese. It’s topped with hand-leafed lettuce and thick slices of tomatoes in freshly baked buns. You can opt to include onions as well.

What States have an In-N-Out Burger?

It has been 70 years since In-N-Out Burger opened its doors. Since then, the chain has expanded to California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Oregon. The chain has 334 locations spread all across these states serve thousands of patrons per year. The chain has also announced plans to open their first Idaho location in Boise / Meridian. On average, In-N-Out Burger will add 5 new locations per year.

What Makes In-N-Out Burger So Special?

In-N-Out Burger differs from other fast food chains as they are known to pay their employees more than the usual wage. Starting employees are paid around $16 per hour, resulting in team members that are happy and motivated. It also allows In-N-Out Burger to take their choice of the best fast-food employees in each area. Because of this, Glassdoor listed In-N-Out Burger as one of the best places to work in 2018.

Employees enjoy flexible schedules, work in a positive environment, feel appreciated, and have equal chances of moving up the ladder. They also enjoy free meals each day they work. Talk about a perk!

Fast food enthusiasts also consider In-N-Out Burger to taste superior compared to other burgers offered by other competitors. Their burgers are thicker, tastier, and healthier thanks to pure and fresh ingredients. The menu is not big, so customers have an easier time choosing what they want.

Lastly, In-N-Out Burger has a secret menu, which adds great marketing flavor. The secret menu makes customers feel like they are “in the know” and part of a secret club.

What’s the Secret Menu at In-N-Out Burger?

quality you can taste

Quality You Can Taste.

Another thing that makes In-N-Out Burger popular is its “secret” menu. This is called so because these items are not in the usual menu displayed in each In-N-Out Burger outlet. However, this secret menu is available in every branch and can also be seen on the company’s website. Simply ask the staff about their secret menu.

Here are some of the items in the Secret Menu:

  • Protein-Style Burger: Removes the bun.
  • 3X3 Burger: 3 beef patties on a burger.
  • 4×4 Burger: 4 beef patties on a burger.
  • Animal-Style Fries: Adds Thousand Island inspired dressing, cheese, grilled onions.
  • Animal-Style Burger: Adds Thousand Island inspired dressing, cheese, grilled onions.
  • The Grilled Cheese: You’ll want to ask for this “plain” if you don’t want lettuce and tomato added.
  • The Flying Dutchman: Two slices of cheese melted between two beef patties. There is no bun, lettuce, or other toppings. This is a good low-carb or gluten-free option.
  • The Scooby Snack: This order adds a single grilled beef patty to fries or burgers.
  • Mustard Grilled Patty: This is regular beef patty that is grilled with mustard before being cooked. If you want a kick of flavor, give this a try.
  • Whole Onion Grilled Burger: This is a regular cheeseburger with a whole grilled onion instead of the usual sliced onions.
  • Roadkill Fries: Regular fries topped with In-N-Out’s signature sauce (Thousand island inspired dressing), American cheese, and caramelized onions. Then a bit of crumbled beef patty is added on top.
  • Cheesy Fries: Adds melted cheese to fries.

In-N-Out Burger also serves french fries, fountain drinks, and 3 flavors of milkshake. Recently in 2018, the chain added hot chocolate with marshmallows. These are all on the regular menu.

In-N-Out Burger was founded by the entrepreneur couple Harry and Esther Snyder. Currently, Lyndsi Snyder, their grandchild, is the owner.

Unlike other popular fast-food chains, In-N-Out Burger didn’t adopt the franchise model or go public. They believe that excessive and rapid business growth can compromise the quality of their food and service. Because of this, the In-N-Out Burger chain has a loyal customer base and expanded more carefully than other concepts.
