Each year around my daughters birthdays, I open up a journal that’s stored in my office filing cabinet with their names on it. Then I sit down and recall the adventures, key moments, and achievements of their lives, and in addition to notable events that happened over the past year like getting ears pierced or going on a family vacation. I plan to pass along these journals to my daughters once they reach adulthood so they’ll be able to retain extra memories of their childhood and help show I loved them after I’m gone.
This year, I decided to add an extra section at the end of the journal called a family mission statement. A family mission statement is a written declaration that outlines a family’s core values, beliefs, goals, and guiding principles. It serves as a compass for the family, providing a clear sense of direction and purpose.
By articulating what is most important to the family, this statement helps guide decisions, shapes behavior, and fosters a sense of unity and identity. In this article, I’ll be sharing my own families mission statement and other examples you can use to help inspire your own.

Before sharing my family mission statement, I want to express a couple of the goals I have with mine. First, I want my children to understand they have the power to form their own mission statement when they get older. After all, mission statements evolve over time as we age and change.
Also, I don’t know what my daughters will choose to pursue as they grow older. I want them to be able to choose their own destiny and personal mission statement in life.
Finally, I wanted my families mission statement to include broad and principle based values. I want it to be timeless and provide general guidelines for life that won’t change very much as the years roll on. Without further delay, here is the mission statement I wrote to the family.
Our Family Mission Statement
As a family united in love and purpose, we commit ourselves to the principle of kindness, both within our home and in the wider world. We believe in the power of small acts of generosity and compassion, and pledge to regularly seek out opportunities to uplift others through giving and helping.

My intent with this statement is to reflect on the core values I cherish as a family and provide a guiding framework for daily actions and decision making.
As you can see, my families statement is only 5 paragraphs in length. You can write something shorter or longer depending on the points you want to get across. Personally, I like to keep things brief and might actually rework this in a shorter way. I want something that can be read and reflected on in only a couple of minutes and revisited regularly.

Finally, while I’ve written this family statement in a journal for my daughters, I also decided to print it out and frame the message so it would be visible in my home. After all, if a family mission statement is tucked away, it will be forgotten. I feel like this is something you need to come back on and reflect upon regularly as a reminder.
