Volunteering is a selfless act that helps communities, people or animals in need. In the US, 63 million Americans volunteer their time and energy each year. According to Volunteer Hub, people that volunteer regularly have a 27% better chance of gaining employment. Not surprisingly, those who donate their time and expertise are some of the most motivated people.

Whether you work with volunteers for a weekend fundraising events or campaigns to support those in need, there are all sorts of meaningful ways to say thank you to volunteers. Through gifts, dinner treats, or a simple handwritten notes, showing gratitude to volunteers is essential for making these selfless individuals feel valued.

Here’s a list of more than 155 ways you can say thank you to volunteers. These examples are categorized by medium – whether it’s through email, note, or thank you card.

How Can You Express Gratitude for Volunteers?

Volunteers do such a selfless act in helping other people. Here are some ideas you can consider if you want to express your gratitude towards them.

  1. Send them flowers – Sending flowers is an everlasting way to demonstrate gratitude. You can do the same to volunteers. Even a simple bouquet can put a smile on someone’s face and bring light into the world.
  2. Film a thank you video – Gather everyone and film them saying a few thank you words they want to tell the volunteers. You can also edit the video and add a simple presentation with photos of volunteers helping an organization or community. If you’re able to record individual thank you videos for volunteers, the video will make an even bigger impact.
  3. Treat them to dinner or BBQ – Book a dinner at a nice restaurant and treat the volunteers to awesome food they can enjoy. This can also be a chance to talk to everyone and let them know how much you appreciate what they’ve done.
  4. Send letter from the community – If you’re not up to film a video, you can ask the community to write a letter or a simple note and compile everything and hand them over to the volunteers. Handwritten notes are more personal and add a touch of appreciation and gratitude to the volunteers. You can use the examples in this post to inspire such a letter.
  5. Give out personalized merchandise – Printing out each volunteer’s name or photo on a tote bag, shirt or other merchandise can make them feel special and a unique way for your company to show your appreciation to them.
