When is Shavuot?

When is Shavuot?

Known also as the “Feast of Weeks” or “Pentecost”, Shavuot is a Jewish holiday that falls on the sixth day of the Hebrew month known as “Sivan”, which usually falls between May 15 and June 14 in the Gregorian calendar. The second of the three Pilgrim Festivals of the Jewish religious calendar, the holiday of Shavuot is celebrated on June, 5 in 2022.

What is the meaning of Shavuot?

The holy scrolls.

In the Book of Exodus, Shavuot marked the day on which the Torah, the Hebrew Bible, was presented to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. It also marks the traditional wheat harvest in the Land of Israel. During the Temple period, the first fruits of the harvest were brought to the Temple, and two loaves of bread made from the new wheat were offered.

In the Torah, it tells how it took Moses and the Israelites seven weeks to trek through the desert to reach Mount Sinai, and arrived there at the time of the ancient Hebrew agricultural festival. In the Torah, the Passover is followed by the seven-week Counting of the Omer, after which Shavuot is celebrated, often with the idea of “bringing the outside inside” by decorating houses and synagogues with flowers and greenery.
