What are some appropriate ways to comfort employees who experience the loss of a father?

The death of someone close to a person brings so much pain and sorrow. Those who are grieving can feel lonely, devastated, lost, angry or heartbroken. Comforting acts, a phone call or even simple text messages sent to the grieving party can let coworkers know they have a support system at work.

Navigating personal situations at work is never easy. It can be appealing as a colleague to ignore the situation all together because talking about it can be uncomfortable. Below are appropriate ways to comfort co-employees whose father passed away:

  • If you are close to the employee, try to visit him as soon as you get the sad news. If you are not that close, you can send a text or email message expressing your sympathy. What’s important is to reach out. It is comforting for the co-employee to know that there’s someone who cares.
  • Don’t bring up the event in a group meeting. A group meeting is not the time to share information about this deeply personal subject.
  • Admit that the loss is really painful. Don’t come up with various scenarios to try making sense of the death. Never say that everything happens for a reason.
  • Once the funeral is over, give your co-employee his personal space so he can grieve in peace. If you are a manager, give the employee some paid time off to deal with the funeral and other obligations.

You might struggle getting back to normal life after the passing of your father. This is completely normal and it’s okay to take time to grieve. Remember that time will bring comfort to the situation.
