Did Tim Hortons Increase Prices Again?
Tim Hortons has raised menu prices numerous times since opening in 1964 when you could purchase a small coffee for only 10 cents. Unfortunately, the days of sub $1 coffees are long gone at Tim Hortons and every other coffee chain on the planet.
Based on the article from CBC News, the owner of Tim Hortons, Restaurant Brands International (RBI), announced lower profits and higher prices for some products at Tim Hortons in 2017. Lower profitably led to price increases of some hot beverage and breakfast menu items. The chain cited rising operational costs as the reason for the price hike, which was about 10 cents on these items.
The announcement came at a time when RBI was facing an internal revolt by Tim Hortons franchisees in Canada and the US. The franchisees accused the company’s head office of penny-pinching, driving up their expenses, and overall mismanagement. RBI denied these allegations.
Fast forward to more recent times, the price of a small coffee at Tim Hortons increased from $1.95 in 2018 to $2.19 in 2019. This was an increase of 24 cents or 12.31% increase.

The reasons behind these price hikes were multifaceted. The cost of coffee beans has been on an upward trajectory, and Tim Hortons has also been investing in new and improved coffee machines, which has led to higher operational costs. Additionally, the company has been facing increased competition, which has put pressure on prices.

Moving ahead to 2023 and prices are continuing to move upward. Just this year the Everything Bagel went from $1.79 to $1.99 (11.17% bump). Medium iced cappuccinos went from $3.29 to $3.49, a 6.17% price increase.
Not surprisingly, social media has taken note of these price hikes. Some users are understand prices are rising at restaurants across the board. Others are frustrated and feel like Tim Hortons doesn’t offering enough value for the price any longer. Here are some of the candid comments from Reddit users:
- “I understand that prices are rising, but I feel like Tim Hortons is taking advantage of their customers. The quality of their food has been declining for years, and now they’re raising prices.”
- “I’m not surprised that Tim Hortons is raising prices. They’re a business, and they have to make a profit. But I do think they’re going to lose some customers because of this.”
- “I’m still going to go to Tim Hortons, but I’m going to be more selective about what I order. I’m not going to waste my money on overpriced food that’s not very good.”
Unstable supply chains, labor inflation, and rising commodity prices forced Tim Hortons to increase the prices over the years. Like many restaurants and fast food chains, they have not been spared these pressures and challenges.
Restaurant Brands International (RBI) Chief Executive Officer Jose Cil believes it’s essential to stay within reach of the consumer from a pricing standpoint. Only time will tell if the chain will increase menu prices further and if the end consumer will accept these elevated costs.
Is Tim Horton’s Business Performance Strong?
Tim Hortons has demonstrated resilience and growth during a difficult past couple of years. But the benefits of this growth may not always be shared with franchisees according to the Alliance of Canadian Franchisees (ACF).
Despite the closure of some locations, the coffee chain has seen an impressive 11% increase in sales in the first quarter reaching a total of $1.73 billion. This surge in sales is a testament to the brand’s enduring popularity and its ability to adapt and thrive in challenging circumstances.

The Walnut Crunch is back at Tim Hortons.
However, it’s not all smooth sailing. Despite the overall success, there’s a brewing storm among the franchisees. They’ve voiced concerns about their profitability, claiming that the cost of ingredients they purchase from RBI has outpaced menu price increases, thereby squeezing their margins. RBI has countered these claims, asserting that the strong traffic and sales momentum are improving the situation. They’ve also highlighted that Tim Hortons franchisees have seen a meaningful increase in their profitability in Q1.
Yet, the Alliance of Canadian Franchisees (ACF) remains unconvinced. The ACF, which had previously gone public with its concerns, maintains that the profitability issue persists, even suggesting that Tim Hortons franchises were nearing a “crisis point.” In response, RBI has implemented new reporting practices to publicly disclose franchisee profits.
The first round of reporting revealed that the average Tim Hortons restaurant made $220,000 in annual earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, which is roughly $100,000 less than in 2018. Despite the ongoing dispute with the ACF, some franchisees have reported strong improvement in first-quarter profits year-over-year. However, they acknowledge that profits are not yet at 2018 levels. All this being said, Tim Hortons is a brand that continues to demonstrate year-over-year growth even though franchisees have experienced challenges.
