“Campaigns against corporations have led them to take greater care that their goods are not produced under unacceptable working conditions for starvation wages. All of us, by the decisions we make about how we live and work and travel and consume help to shape an environment. To think and act morally, to do what is right because it is right, to influence others; it begins to create a climate of opinion; good like evil, is infectious.” – Rabbi Jonathon Sacks (The Dignity of Difference)

“The proportion of a company’s total market value that exceeds its book value has increased from 40% in the early 1980s to over 80% at the end of the 1990s. This means that only 20% of a company’s value is reflected in the accounting system… [thus the largest portion of a company’s economic activities] can easily be overlooked.” – Jurgen H. “Greater transparency is an unstoppable force. It is the product of growing demands from everybody with an interest in any corporation – its stakeholder web – and of rapid technological change, above all the spread of the Internet, that makes it far easier for firms to supply information, and harder for them to keep secrets. Firms now know that their internal emails may one day become public knowledge, for instance, and many big companies must coexist with independent websites where employees can meet anonymously to air their grievances. With greater transparency will come greater accountability and better corporate behavior. Rather than engage in futile resistance to it, firms should actively embrace transparency and rethink their values and generally get in better shape.” – Don Tapscott, co-author The Naked Corporation

Four Examples of Social Responsibility

There are several advantages to incorporating social responsibility programs into a firm, from increasing efficiency to attracting top personnel. Furthermore, it helps you to boost the general reputation of your company, which can lead attracting more customers. Since moving ahead with a social responsibility program can be costly, carefully considering which initiative is best for your business.

A sustainable coffee business.

Customers want to do business with companies that are ethical. Here are four different forms of social responsibility and examples on how they are implemented in a business.

Economic Responsibility

When a company acts responsibly, it prioritizes doing good over maximizing profit. One way a corporation can demonstrate economic responsibility is through a fair compensation system that appropriately rewards each employee and eliminates historical pay disparities based on gender or ethnicity.

Ethical Responsibility

Becoming ethically responsible implies the company follows fairness in the workplace across the board. This might include handling all personnel, shareholders, and consumers fairly and respectfully. It also means supporting employees from a variety of background including LGBTQ+ and African American communities.

One way to provide ethical responsibility is by establishing a minimum wage increase and providing benefits like child care services and flexible schedules that allows diverse communities to thrive within your organization.

Environmental Responsibility

It is critical for firms devoted to social responsibility to collaborate in environmentally friendly initiatives. Companies can contribute significantly to carbon emissions, pollution, waste, and depletion of natural resources, and by pledging environmental responsibility, a company takes responsibility for its ecological impact.

Environmental responsibility could take many various shapes depending on the size and industry of a company. For some businesses, this involves utilizing alternative energy sources and environmentally friendly materials. Others could implement an organization-wide recycling policy or donate to and engage with local environmental organizations.

Philanthropic Responsibility

Businesses are practically expected to give back to the areas in which they operate and contribute to initiatives that correspond with the company’s goals in today’s society. Companies are fulfilling their philanthropic obligations whenever they do this. In other words, these companies make money and then give back some of their revenues to non-profit organizations.

Such philanthropic commitment might range from supporting a regional nonprofit’s yearly fundraiser to giving a portion of a company’s yearly earnings to a worthy cause like fighting hunger.

Autonomously, by preventing socially destructive acts, through participating in activities that enhance societal goals, one could be socially responsible. Since activities of one generation carry ramifications for subsequent generations, social responsibility must be intergenerational.
