Debt collection has been around for thousands of years. Even the Bible references debt and tax collectors in numerous books. As far back as Biblical times, the industry has not been looked upon fondly to say the least.

If you find yourself getting contacted by debt collectors, realize that you do have rights. As I mentioned earlier, I used to be $50k+ in credit and student loan debt. But at the time, I didn’t think I had any options aside from avoiding calls from unknown numbers.

What I only learned years later is once a debt goes to collections (especially in terms of credit card debt), you can often negotiate to pay a lower amount. This happed to me in the past. After a couple years of being delinquent on a bill, I got a letter in the mail offered me 50% off a certain debt. The item would also be removed from my credit report.

I was shocked to get this letter. But later, I learned this is standard operating procedure among debt collection companies. These organizations understand that it’s better to get some money versus no money.

Don’t get me wrong. I think you should always pay your debt. It’s the right thing to do. By my mid-30s I was able to pay off all my student loans, credit cards, and car payments to be completely debt free.

But I also recognize that some people will fall on tough financial times. It’s tough to put blame on kids who are instructed to take out tens of thousands to fund a college education and then wonder why they struggle to repay their educational expenses with an entry-level job.

How was I finally able to pay off my debts? I won’t lie. It took me a long time to get things paid off. My first two years out of college and working full-time, I don’t think I made any financial progress toward my balance. I even had to temporarily put some of obligations on “interest only payments.”

I was able to pay off my debts by eventually getting higher paying jobs. Eventually, I started blogging on this website and started making extra money that I was able to use to pay off even more debt. My advice to you? Find ways to make more money by getting a new job or starting a side business. The more money you make, the faster you can pay off debt and improve your financial situation.
