My friend Kevin Anson started a video production company out of his house about a decade ago. Fast forward to today and Kevin’s decision to start his on video marketing business has taken him from working a 9-to-5 office job to collaborating with some of the biggest names in online marketing.

I sat down with Kevin to get his thoughts on video company names that other founders could use to launch their own businesses. These suggestions are what came out of a late-night brain-storming session where more than a few IPA’s were enjoyed.

Tips for Coming Up with a Unique Video Production Name

Your production company’s name is an important piece of the branding and marketing potential of a company. Globally, there are 57,000 production enterprises so you’ll need a brand that stand on its own. A brand name can serve as a tailwind or headwind over time so choose wisely. Here are some tips to accomplish this goal.

connecting to wifi

I record my own videos on a cell phone.

Reference to your inspiration. Most professional filmmakers and videographers began their careers as movie fans. Reference some of the feelings that drew you to video in the first place. You may use a line from your favorite film or a connection to a fictitious character or place. You might even use a line from the title of a beloved television program as a subliminal tribute to your personal preferences. Use a point of reference from one of your favorite shows or tales, even if it isn’t anything the ordinary moviegoer would identify with.

Use your name. When you choose to be renowned as a successful producer, name your production firm after yourself demonstrates you are the mastermind driving the creative operations of the business. Although this strategy may work for a well-known producer who wants to branch out and start their own company, it may not perform as well for an unknown production house looking to make a splash.

There are plenty of examples of production companies that have used this approach. For example, LucasFilm is a short and pleasant name that includes only Lucas’ surname with a qualifier. This is a clear and simple approach that works.

As a starting point, consider an amusing understatement. Many artists use irony in their naming conventions. Anonymous Content and Working Title Films, for instance, similarly play on the concept of laying low and then not being particularly innovative. The contradiction is both of these companies have now become recognized creating well-known and imaginative titles.

Make a naming structure out of video equipment. While it may not appear to be particularly unique, it could assist prospective clients and partners grasp what you do right away. It is a very unique way to brand your business. For example, you could name your production firm after Focus Features or Oscilloscope Laboratories, which were inspired by technical industry names.

You might even name your business after industry lingoes, such as C47, Barn-doors, Glass movements, and any other on-set phrase. But make sure you’re using generic equipment rather than particular brand names. Even if your favorite camera is a Sony, I’m certain calling the enterprise Sony Pictures would get you into legal trouble.

Make use of a name generator. And when all else goes south, you could always create a production company using business name generators. A few of the names come from puns combining the words “film” and other terms like “romantic” or “remembrance.”

Some offer terms make subtle references to essential concepts, such as “film layer,” which could imply your company operates on numerous levels. Certain adjectives like “span” denote a long history of effort, while “verge” denotes cutting-edge work.

About The Video Production Industry

The process of creating video content for a video is referred to as video production. It’s similar to filmmaking, however instead of film stock, video is captured as analog signals on videotape, digitally on VHS, or as digital data is stored on hard drives, optical discs, magnetic tape, memory cards, or SSDs. It’s basically the complete video-making process. Be it a short film, a feature film, a company marketing video, a television commercial, a music video, or another genre of film, the procedure is essentially the same.

Stages of Video Production

Pre-production, production (sometimes referred to as principal photography), and post-production are the three steps of video production. From the minute an idea pops into your head to the moment the film is published to the public, these three sections cover every step of video production.

Pre-production encompasses all stages of the video production process prior to filming. Scheduling, scriptwriting, logistics, and other administrative chores are included. Production, on the other hand, is the phase of video production that involves filming the video subject(s) and capturing the video material (electronic moving images). Post-production meanwhile, is the process of merging video clips into a final product that tells a story or communicates a message in either a live event setting (live production) or after the event has occurred (post-production).

The entirety of video content is generally recorded on electronic media such as an SD card for end-user cameras or solid-state drive and flash memory for professional cameras. The MPEG container type (.mpeg,.mpg,.mp4), QuickTime (.mov), Audio Video Interleave (.avi), Windows Media Video (.wmv), and DivX are all prevalent formats for video material that is distributed digitally on the internet (.avi, .divx).
