What is Friendsgiving?

Friendsgiving is a portmanteau of “friends” and “thanksgiving.” The main event often consists of a hefty, hearty meal served and eaten among friends during Thanksgiving.

The meal is often followed by a drinking session with party games. A Friendsgiving can be formal or informal, depending on the preference of the participants. In general, however, a Friendsgiving event is less formal than a traditional Thanksgiving celebration.

How Did it Start?

Although celebrating Thanksgiving with friends is not new, the term “friendsgiving” is a relatively new word. The word first appeared in Usenet posts and Twitter, labeling this informal meal among friends. Friendsgiving was not explained in these posts so it’s possible the word “friendsgiving” has been mentioned for some time before it finding its way into written English.

Friendsgiving was celebrated all over the country like an after-party following a more formal Thanksgiving celebration with the family. However the word—and the celebration—became truly ingrained in society when Bailey’s Irish Cream used the word in a 2011 ad campaign. Friendsgiving also became a major plot point in an episode of the show “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” It’s safe to say Friendsgiving has gone mainstream at this point.

What Should You Serve?

Traditional Thanksgiving food may be served during Friendsgiving. These include

  • roast turkey
  • chicken pot pie
  • pumpkin pie
  • mashed potatoes
  • devilled eggs
  • homemade rolls

Popular drinks such as beer and wine may also be served during Friendsgiving. Friendsgiving is one of those times when busy friends can come together and catch up with times. At times, they want to celebrate the event away from their homes.

If your restaurant, café, deli, or food establishment is open to serve during Thanksgiving, you might want to embrace Friendsgiving too. You can offer your establishment as a venue where close friends can get together for this new celebration.
