What Kinds of Daycare Centers Could you Start?

Drop off.

If you plan to open a daycare or childcare center there are several options. Choose the type that best suits your own style of child care or what works in your area.

Family-run childcare homes have always been an option. At home childcare is can be appealing because you can have a close connection with the provider and usually isn’t any turnover in employees. As the care provider, you care for smaller groups of children in a residential home setting and may or may not need to be licensed depending on the state laws.

My mom operated a daycare center out of the home for 10 years growing up. It can be convenient, but it’s also tough having kids show up at your house at 7 a.m. so parents can get to work. Your home becomes the place of work, which is not ideal for everyone.

Childcare centers and daycare centers are normally run in more commercial settings like malls and commercial buildings. Since the buildings are larger, they can serve more families.

Typically, you’ll need to have several members of staff and several different rooms to cater to smaller groups in the larger center. Licensing is also dependent on state laws and licensed centers are required to meet basic health and safety requirements and are regulated. The revenue potential of these childcare centers is greater, but operation is also more complex.

Preschool Programs are usually run in affiliation with schools, religious institutions, non-profit organizations, and childcare centers. These institutions offer preschool care for children from 3-5 years old.

As with all childcare, licensing is dependent on state law and is regulated by the local government. Most preschool centers take on the education of the youngsters, teaching them to read and write basic letters and giving them a more educational experience. My wife and I chose to enroll our own children in a preschool program to give them a head start in elementary school.

School age childcare is for children old enough to be at school, but still young enough to take care of themselves outside school hours on holidays or weekends. Usually offered by both childcare centers and home-based daycare businesses, they are easier to run and less stressful since the kids are more self sufficient at this point. Religious centers, recreation centers, and youth centers also offer this type of program for school-age kids. These are sometimes called after school programs.

The daycare industry was previously valued at more than $42 billion dollars a year. The childcare industry was hit hard by the recent health crisis becoming more scarce and more expensive. As things return closer to normal, I expect this industry to rebound quickly as parents return to work.
