FAQs about the White Castle Menu

What type of Meat Does White Castle Serve? Do they use Soy?

The type of meat White Castle serves depends on what you order. If you’re ordering sliders, expect 100% beef. The beef is ground and formed into small, square patties and are steamed. On the other hand if you order the vegetarian slider option called the Impossible Slider at White Castle, you can expect a soy-based patty that tastes similar to the familiar beef patties.

You can also order Chicken Breast slider that contains all white-meat chicken breast. You can also order Sausage, Egg & Cheese Sliders that contain pork for the sausage patty.

What were White Castle Prices in the 1970s?

Having been around for decades, White Castle, along with other fast-food chains have gone through a lot of changes since the day they first opened their doors to the public. As you might expect, the prices back in the 1970s were much less than they are today due to inflation.

When it comes to prices, boy were they cheap back in the day! The average price of a White Castle burger in the 1960s was $0.12. In 1967, it would cost you $0.14 for a White Castle burger. Three years later in 1970, you would only need to pay $0.15 and $0.25 by 1978.

The Brief History of White Castle

White Castle menu poster

White Castle was founded in 1921 by Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson in Wichita, Kansas. The founders were determined to change the public’s perception of ground beef, which had suffered due to the unsanitary practices of the meatpacking industry.

To overcome this, they built small, white porcelain buildings that resembled castles, promising cleanliness and quality. Their most iconic menu item, the slider—a small, square-shaped hamburger—was sold for just 5 cents. These sliders, cooked on a bed of onions came to define the brand.

Over the decades, White Castle experienced significant growth and evolution, introducing innovations such as carryout service and selling frozen sliders in grocery stores. Despite eschewing the franchising model common in the fast-food industry, the company managed to expand beyond its Midwestern roots.

By 2021, White Castle operated more than 360 locations across 13 states. It has maintained a strong cult following, fuelled in part by pop culture references in movies like “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.” The brand’s longevity and influence on the fast-food industry have solidified its place in American culinary history. If you haven’t tried this burger chain yet, it’s worth giving a try.
