What are some specific ways businesses have kept staff motivated?

Businesses try all sorts of ways to improve morale in the office. Sometimes these strategies work. Other times, they can backfire on employers and end up lowering moral. Here are common ways companies keep staff pumped up and productive.

Financial Incentives

  • Bonuses: Awarding performance or year-end bonuses to top-performing employees. This is always a motivator for high performers, especially upper level management where bonuses are a larger percentage of their overall compensation. If you want bonuses to be a true motivator, you need to make sure they are significant from a financial perspective and controllable by the employee.
  • Salary raises: Increasing the salary of employees based on performance, tenure, or market trends. If employers aren’t making market rate, they will find out and you’ll lose staff since you’re uncompetitive from a compensation perspective.
  • Stock options: In the early years of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, the founder, recognized the importance of aligning the interests of employees with the long-term success of the company. To achieve this, Amazon provided stock options to all employees, including hourly workers, not just the top executives. This was a strategic move to incentivize and retain talent, especially during the initial years when the company was not profitable and salaries might not have been as competitive as larger, established companies. I personally know some low-level Amazon employees that greatly benefited from this approach over the years as the share priced climbed from under $100 to over $1,000 over the years.

  • Employee of the Month: Recognizing outstanding performers on a regular basis.
  • Award ceremonies: Hosting events where employees are acknowledged for their achievements.
  • Public praise: Recognizing employees in company newsletters, emails, or bulletin boards. I know people in the workplace that keep little notes of recognition like these for years. Best of all, this strategy is free to use and only takes a few minutes of time for a senior leader to offer praise to employees. These public displays of praise are often remembered by staff for years to come.

  • Training programs: Offering courses and workshops to improve skills.
  • Tuition reimbursement: Funding or subsidizing further education. Starbucks, known for its commitment to employee welfare, introduced the Starbucks College Achievement Plan in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU). This initiative offers eligible U.S. Starbucks partners (employees) the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree with full tuition coverage, all through ASU’s online courses.
  • Mentorship programs: Pairing junior employees with senior mentors.

Flexible Work Arrangements

These more flexible work arrangements can help workers save money on commuting and help employees with families. If you are able, consider offering some flexible work arrangements.

  • Remote work: Allowing employees to work from home or other remote locations.
  • Flexible hours: Letting employees choose their work hours within certain limits.
  • Compressed workweeks: Working longer hours but fewer days, like four 10-hour days.

Wellness and Work-Life Balance

  • Fitness programs: Offering gym memberships or organizing fitness challenges.
  • Mental health initiatives: Providing counseling services or mindfulness workshops.
  • Vacation and time off: Offering generous leave policies or even unlimited vacation in some cases.

This is a fun way to share an idea and get in front of senior leaders that ground floor employees might not get to connect with on a regular basis.
