Prior to the mobile web, the internet cafe was a welcome sight for business travelers needing a place to access the internet to check email or recharge a phone. While the number of  cyber cafes have declined in recently years with broadband internet access becoming more widely available there’s still a practical case for this business who want a place where they can access the internet other than in their home or office. These spaces can be valuable for remote employees, online entrepreneurs, and students alike.

For the more innovative cafe founders, you could also try attracting teams of local gamers. The video game industry is valued at over $159 billion according to reports. Many of these players are part of teams so creating a comfortable space to attract gamers is a creative spin on the old idea.

If you’re thinking about opening an internet cafe, here’s our list of marketing slogans and quotes that fit this business.

What are the social benefits of an internet cafe?

A drink with a view.

Information. Internet cafes can be a gateway of information to what’s happening around the world. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the internet cafe is our only source for information, but for people who have limited access to information, an internet cafe serves as a window into the world. These places can be critical for lower income people that can’t afford broadband internet in their homes.

Communication and connectivity. With the emergence of social media sites, people can stay connected throughout their lives. Especially in 3rd world countries, few people have mobile access to the internet and internet cafes serve as their primary access to communication. Today, the ability to communicate with people outside our country is commonplace.

Economic benefit. With access to a global information that’s also free, you have the ability to learn new skills that are valuable in the marketplace or start a business. You can learn just about any skill by finding the right YouTube video. If you have the desire to learn and access to the internet, skilling up or gaining employment online is possibility for everyone.

Performance. Many internet cafes, especially in 3rd world countries cater to the gaming community. The common PC is not built for today’s high-end gaming performance. Because of this, internet cafes have ramped up the specs of their PCs to entice gamers to use their cafes for online gaming.

Cost. The rate of internet cafes around the world varies. Typically, internet cafes charge an hourly fee while others provide one-time payment for unlimited monthly membership. When you travel around the world and need to communicate with your loved ones, an internet cafe is still a cheaper option than purchasing a monthly satellite fee.

Short History of the Cyber Cafe

The history of cyber cafes was never well documented, but here’s what we do know. In the U.S., Wayne Gregori opened the SFnet Coffeehouse Network in the Bay Area back in 1991. Gregori installed coin-operated computer terminals in coffeehouses around the Bay Area offering FIDOnet mail and eventually internet mail in 1992.

In 1995, Glenn McGinnis and co-founders opened @Cafe, one of New York’s first internet cafes. The concept was revolutionary at the time since they used T1 connection used by universities and large businesses.

Internet speeds in most public places used slow dial-up connections at the time, with customers paying a premium for the service. Despite the high cost of the T1 connection (owners paid $9,000 for the service), people found it fun to use high-speed internet in a coffee shop even though there were only a small number of websites at the time. Suddenly, companies started using the internet cafes to launch their own websites.

Since then, internet cafes grew in popularity around the world. In Asia, internet cafes became popular due to the emergence of multiplayer online gaming. These shops also sprouted around the European hemisphere in the 90s, but then saw a decline in recent years since most coffee shops now offer the same access speeds as internet cafes.
