Either you’re planning for a wedding, Christmas party, a birthday party, or tasting event for a catering service. No matter what it is the food served plays a crucial role in the delight of your guests. You’ve probably encountered guests commenting about the taste and quality of the food that was served. This story can be particularly impactful if you’re serving any kind of ethnic food.

How to Organize A Tasting Party

Wings with a variety of dip options is a popular option for events.

Organizing a tasting party can be an ambitious task for most party organizers. Not only do you need to attract the right people to the event, but you’ve got an offer a unique food tasting experience. If you’re new to organizing tasting parties, it would be best to have a guide on where to start and the laundry list of things you need to prepare. We’ve prepared a brief guide on how you would go about planning your first tasting party.

  1. Choose your category. The first step in planning any tasting party is knowing what type of food or beverages you intend to let your guests taste. Other than the things you believe they will enjoy, you can also select foods that you think they are curious about, but haven’t tried yet. This will give them a feeling of anticipation about what you can expect.
  2. Narrow down your selection. From the initial step, you may have a lot of things in mind. Different people have different tastes of course, but you won’t be able to serve every type of cuisine possible at a single event. Instead find a niche to focus on like pizza, Italian food, sushi, appetizers or other themes already mentioned in this post. Do an elimination process to determine what your guests could agree on. It also helps to select a theme so you could focus on a particular type or group of food. Just make sure you select food pairs well with each other. Don’t forget about the beverages that could enhance these flavors too.
  3. Shopping. Once you’ve decided what you want to prepare, now is the time to head to the grocery store and stock up on supplies. You may also want to consider purchasing beverages to serve before, during, and after tasting. If you are unable to find the food you intend to prepare locally, you can research online for specialty shops that will ship the ingredients you need.
  4. Set Up Everything. This is the time you need to organize everything that you’ve planned. Consider everything from pens, tableware, and even printed tasting sheets so you can get feedback from your guests. This is also the time to organize the serving table and what food needs to be in the same area. Start with the milder flavors going into the strong ones to prepare your guest’s palate gradually. Doing it the other way around may turn off some of your guests and might not continue with the food tasting at all. You may also consider preparing background information for each delicacy and where to buy them for guests who could be interested.
  5. Food Tasting. As a host, here’s where your PR skills take the front seat. Invite your guests to the first food and lead them through the order. Encourage them to focus and take notes on their thoughts, then you may discuss with them the sample afterward. Before going to the next food, it would be advisable to offer them water to cleanse their palate and be ready for the next food in line.

As you can see there’s plenty to organize even when hosting a small tasting event for friends. But don’t forget to enjoy the process as well. Food tasting events can be powerful ways to be introduced to interesting people, nurture relationships and sample foods you’ve never tried.
